THE AMAZING TRANSFORMATION OF "THE PATCH"
ABOUT THE PATCH
Few communities have a connection to golf as deep as Augusta’s. Since 1928, Augusta Municipal Golf Course, older than Augusta National and affectionately known as The Patch, has provided local golfers with a place to play, learn, and build friendships. When conditions deteriorated significantly, an opportunity arose to preserve that tradition, create an exceptional public golf experience, and give back to the golf community.
Through a partnership among Masters Tournament Charities, Augusta Technical College, and The First Tee of Augusta, a completely new golf course and clubhouse for public play opened on April 15, 2026. Bobby Jones Links was selected to operate The Patch and help bring the partners’ vision to life.
THE DIFFERENCE THAT WAS MADE
A reimagined 18-hole golf course by Tom Fazio and Beau Welling, complemented by The Loop at The Patch, a nine-hole short course designed by Tiger Woods and TGR Design.
More ways to enjoy the game, including 17 acres of practice facilities with Trackman Range, 20 covered bays, and a complimentary 12-hole putting course.
A new modern clubhouse, golf shop, and grille that extend the experience beyond the course.
A multitude of grow-the-game initiatives in partnership with the First Tee of Augusta were added.
When the golf course reopened, rates for Augusta residents were $25 on weekdays and $35 on weekends, making golf very affordable while offering an exceptional experience.
A project of this significance requires collaboration and a clear understanding of each partner’s role. The project partners and architects delivered the vision and physical transformation. Bobby Jones Links’ role is to translate that investment into a welcoming, well-managed operation.
Building the operating team. Our involvement included recruiting for golf operations, the golf shop, and food and beverage ahead of reopening. Today, The Patch has dedicated leaders in general management, golf, course and grounds, and hospitality.
Committing leadership to the opening. BJL recognized Josh Deal for the substantial time and effort he devoted to The Patch, supporting the project beyond his usual responsibilities and demonstrating our belief that service is a team effort.
Keeping community access central. The reopening plan paired an initial period for local groups and high school teams with a gradual increase in available tee times. Affordable local pricing and multiple ways to play support the project’s public golf mission.
Preserving a connection to the people who know The Patch best. Longtime former general manager Ira Miller serves as Patch Ambassador, maintaining an important link between the course’s past and its future.
The Patch demonstrates the role professional management can play when a community invests in public golf: bringing operational focus to an ambitious vision while keeping the people it serves at the center.
