Covid-19 Update from Bobby Jones Links

Finn Scooters Are A Shining Light At The Georgia Club

When Reggie Kratzer saw a demonstration of Finn Cycles earlier this year, he was a bit skeptical. But Kratzer, general manager of The Georgia Club in Statham, decided to bring in eight of the single-rider scooters “to see what they are all about.’’

Now Kratzer can’t imagine the club without them. The Georgia Club, managed by Bobby Jones Links, was the first golf club in the state to bring in Finn Cycles, each of which carry one golf bag and a few accessories. Finn Cycles were developed by Rick Reimers, founder and owner Sun Mountain Sports. Customized Finn scooters will be available to the U.S. and European Ryder Cup captains at this month’s Ryder Cup in Kohler, WI.

But back to Georgia.

“They’ve been kind of a shining light,’’ said Kratzer, who liked the Finn Scooters so much as now has a fleet of 12.  “We had some naysayers and some members who weren’t happy and others who thought it was a cool idea. But (the scooters) go out every day in the morning and again in the afternoon. Even some of our older members and ladies have taken them out and love them.’’

A lightweight (approximately 75 pounds) Finn Cycle is easy to ride and can get closer to the greens and tee boxes than a standard two-person golf car, making it ideal for faster player. Finn travels at the same speed as a traditional golf cart – approximately 15 mph.

Powered by an electric motor and lithium battery, Kratzer said each Finn Cycle can get up to 45 holes on one charge.

“Pace of play wise, if you are first out and have nothing in front of you, you can get 18 holes in about three hours,’’ Kratzer said. “And if you come out in at the evening, you can get 18 in before the sun goes down. “They’ve brought some life to the club.’’
